Giancarlo Toniutti | Bàardum Guùmuse (For Your Red Tongue) | CD

This work is the result and maybe the endpoint in what has been a detailed research in microtonality seen from the perspective of limited timbral constructions. Giancarlo Toniutti worked regularly during the past 5 years or so on microtonal constructions. First by letting them emerge from the mass structures, then to let them take their seated role in the centre of
the music, through several compositions recently appeared. This work is somehow the successful completion of this trajectory which in its route fully entered the realm of contemporary musics without assuming their academic language. What emerges then is a very delicate, at times very complex, always rigorous composition made up of two main interrelated forms, each one derived from a single sound source. Talking of them, it is difficult to properly imagine what they really are, they sound as wood or brass instruments on one side or metal vibrations on the other. Yet they are the outcome of self-built
(and temporary, as the author specifies) idiophonic instruments, where the sounds derive from the body of the instrument
itself. No string, no membrane, no air is involved. How such instrument are exactly made is not known to us, but the author
provided us with the materials (glass, metals and wood it seems) and most probably played through frictions of some kind. The music is a continuous rather slow movement between different densities, from very thin layers of a modulated timbre to dense groups of events orchestrated together. Subtle or denser timbral microtones arrange the sonic space. There’s never a real break, only a continuous shifting where sounds may come to their natural end within a rarefied field just to reemerge thereafter. But also there’s no definite trajectory, no finalistic criteria, and you can follow the music on its various levels of appreciation, as you’re led from beginning to end.
This work rewards the careful listener.
